One wonders if the Swedes who came to the Black Rock community of Bridgeport, Connecticut in the nineteenth century could have anticipated the S.S. Norden Club as it is today.
Preceded by various Swedish men's choral groups, the "Sångföreningen Norden" earned its charter and built the present club building in November of 1902. Withstanding social and economic changes, storms and fire, the S.S. Norden Club building was placed on the National Register of Historical Places in 1979.
Originally, the club was open only to men of Swedish descent. As time and customs began to change, the Society opened its doors to the general public in 1959. Since then, the Club expanded to include the Ladies Auxiliary, and has grown into its present status as a lively, committed and active organization in the greater Black Rock community of Bridgeport, Connecticut.
The focus of the S.S. Norden Club is "Keeping the ideas of good times, civic commitment, and camaraderie alive and well."
